E3 2021

The Electronic Entertainment Expo is a yearly event (Well, except 2020) Where game companies come together to reveal new games, events and become laughing stock.

Well it’s not called Expo this year, because it’s entirely online. So, The Electronic Entertainment Experience is something I’ve been excited about for a couple of weeks now. But names don’t matter at all, it’s the games. And luckily it’s actually nice to people who live in CEST timezone this time around. I don’t have to watch a Nintendo Direct at 3 am :)

Summer Game Fest.

Before I talk about E3, let’s talk about not E3!
The Summer Game Fest, thanks Geoff Keighley.
So I don’t know what that Death Stranding trailer was? Seriously, what the fuck was that trailer.
So yeah Kojima is doing a “Directors cut” for a game he directed in the first place?
A lot of singing, for some reason. Constant reminders about Amazon Prime.
Free Guy had a trailer about last year and I was actually pretty excited about it? It’s pretty much a Grand Theft Auto movie, but fuuuuuuck me because it looks like another Pixels to me.
Pixels fucking sucks, a nostalgia sucking movie that had the typical Adam Sandler plot. Fuck that movie.
Anyways, a new Free Guy trailer dropped and it looks like it has that same weird vibe Pixels had. It features some cameos of Youtubers and Streamers which is pretty nice. But I don’t know, I really hope it’s good.
Elden Ring fans finally got what they wanted.
The Summer Game Fest isn’t as big as E3, so I wasn’t expecting much. To be honest I was just playing Team Fortress 2 while watching it.

Ubisoft.

Ubisoft is certainly a company, starting with an hour pre-show that was completely useless that I didn’t watch. The first game they showed was Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction, I’ve never really had an interest in the Rainbow Six games. But this one looks interesting because this is a 3 player Co-op zombie esque shooter with a lot of unique mechanics, I have 2 friends so that checks out! The name comes from a mechanic that really interests me: When you die in a mission, your operator becomes unavailable and you have to rescue them. Pretty interesting, maybe I’ll check it out.
A Mario and Rabidds sequel! The first game did pretty well so this was expected, and of course Nintendo leaked themselves because the game was put on their website a couple of hours before E3. The gameplay looks a bit different, I tried the first game but it’s not really my style.
Avatar did not need a fucking game.

June 13
Xbox, Bethesa, Square Enix, PC Gaming.

Xbox and Bethesda started of with Todd Howard as you’d expect. Starbound looks pretty solid.
Stop showing Back 4 Blood. Seriously. There’s a whole conference for this game only, why is this game being so incredibly hyped up?
SEA OF THIEVES HOLY FUCK, this update is HUGE. The last couple months I felt like the updates were becoming pretty weak and I was honestly expecting Rare to drop the game soon. But NO, they collabed with Disney and brought Jack Sparrow to SoT! Not only that, new enemies! Tools! Davy Jones! AND IT’S FREE. And in a couple days tomorrow! Honestly extremely excited for this update, can’t wait.
New games are coming to the Gamepass. Which is the best deal in gaming, including finally Doom 2016.
And fucking Skyrim goddammit Todd. Slime Rancher 2! Honestly wasn’t expecting this one, I really should play the first one again and actually finish it. I’m not a fan of racing game but Forza Horizon 5 looks fucking amazing, seriously it’s insane how good this game look. That render distance is just impressive.
Solid presentation Xbox, nice one. They showed off so many games. But I kinda got annoyed with the half-assed trailers, the trailers that show nothing about the game except the title.

Square Enix is a company I do not like, I simply don’t. But I still tuned in for the laughs.
A Guardians of the Galaxy game was announced, now the GotG are normally a team. So you’d expect to be playing as all of them. No, you play as Starlord only and the game looks boring as fuck.
There was Final Fantasy trailer I don’t fucking care.

PC Gaming is next and Valve was going to make an appearance!
They showcased the Steam Next Fest, which has been known for about 2 weeks. And then they left.
Nice. 20 seconds.
The rest of the PC Gaming show was shit, not saying the games are bad. No interest in any of them.
It’s just those shitty skits between games. The presentation was 90 minutes, 30 of those were awful attempts at comedy. Complete waste of my fucking time.

June 14

Well to be honest there wasn’t really anything interesting here, there were mostly talks like Take Two Interactive. Some people fail to realise those are also part of E3, and because Take Two was talking about diversity the chat was extremely toxic as always.
Why was Verizon there.
Razer revealed a new laptop.
Weird day

June 15
Nintendo.

Oh boy, here we are.
The peak of E3 since 2017 and the reveal of the Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo Directs are always great, but I like many others were a bit scared they would spend a ton of time on 1 game. They only had 40 minutes of course, so I was expecting them to talk about Project Triangle for 15 minutes or something. They didn’t actually, and there were a lot of games announced.
So let’s start.
Right off the bat we got Smash. And it’s Kazuya from Tekken, while I myself never played Tekken or am interested in it. Having Bandai get another character is finally time, they only got Pac-Man so I’m happy for Tekken fans. It’s also cool how we got a Street Fighter, Fatal Fury and now Tekken in one game.
Skipping some games we got MARIO PARTY SUPERSTARS LETS GOOOOOO
Holy shit I can’t believe they did this, I grew up with Mario Party 2 and it’s my all-time favourite Mario Party game! 5 boards from Mario Party 1, 2 and 3 completely remade! And it looks like Woody’s back! 100 minigames! Completely remade OST! And online is actually good? You can save your game and return to it later! FUCK YES!
And then right after we got Metroid Dread!
Now, I was never interested in Metroid. I thought the series was cool, but the 2d games always felt a bit slow for my liking. I now think different.
I seriously want Dread, it looks fantastic. Seriously, this game does not look like a Switch game.
Gameplay looks waaay faster and more interesting while also still having that classic exploring of the Metroid games. The E.M.M.I robots are really interesting and I know I’m going to be stressed from that, but that’s the point! I SERIOUSLY want this game.
Both Mario Party Superstars and Metroid Dread come out in October so there goes my money!
Mario Gold: Super Rush is getting updates after launch, so that’s nice to know.
A new WarioWare if you’re into that.
Doom Eternal is getting the DLC’s on Switch surprisingly, still find it odd how it can run on Switch.
Mario and Rabbids was shown again.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity 1st Expansion Pass was shown a bit, next to a reminder that yep! Skyward Sword HD is still 60 with no improvements or new content! A Zelda Game & Watch, sure? And then FINALLY.
Breath of the Wild 2 is finally shown. And there goes my hopes for a coop with Zelda and Link!
I just hope they do more with Zelda this time, especially after Age of Calamity. Still, this looks amazing.
It kinda looks like it’s both in the air and on the ground? Not sure, still have to finish BotW. Also looks like Link can control time with his new gauntlet or something, could make some interesting dungeons! 2022 release date which makes total sense, hoping they stick to that this time.
That’s it for Zelda 35th! No collection like Mario 35, not even Windwaker HD.
Now I’ve seen some people disappointed with this Direct, and I can see why.
This Direct focused of series that do have very specific fans. Metroid, Advance Wars, WarioWare etc.
Still, it makes me want to get games I wouldn’t otherwise get. This was a solid Direct, very excited for things to come.

And that’s a wrap! It was certainly different. And when you think about it, E3 becomes kind of useless when it’s virtual. But still, E3 is always a delight and it’s something I will always tune into.
Even when it’s at 4 am next year. But only for Nintendo.
Who won?
Nintendo. Duh.
There’s some bias here of course, but Nintendo knows how these show works. They don’t do trailers that show nothing, they don’t do trailers that look nothing like the games. They just do what they’re supposed to.
Right so uhh

There’s a review coming, as well as the Black Mesa review. There’s also something else I’m working on, will be posted soon eventually!
So be on the look-out for S3 when I announce 3 reviews but don’t announce what games I’m reviewing and spend 10 minutes talking about every separate one!
